If you hold trades for seconds or minutes, your profit target is small — so your cost per trade is a large share of it. That is exactly where rebates make the biggest difference.
Costs in pips
Think of cost in pips, because that is how your strategy measures edge. On EURUSD, one pip on one standard lot is about $10.
Cost in pips = (spread × pip value + commission) ÷ pip value
Example — Raw account: 0.1-pip spread + $7 commission per lot
($1 + $7) ÷ $10 = 0.8 pips per round trip
With a rebate of $3 per lot:
($1 + $7 − $3) ÷ $10 = 0.5 pips per round trip
If your average target is 3 pips, the rebate turns a 0.8-pip cost into 0.5 pips — your break-even move drops by more than a third. Over thousands of trades, that is the difference between a strategy that works on paper and one that works in your account.

Check the broker's rules first
Not every broker welcomes very short-term trading. Before opening an account, check:
- Scalping and EA policy. Most large brokers allow both; some restrict them on certain account types.
- Minimum hold time or price-difference rules. Some IB agreements exclude trades held for very short periods from commission — which means no rebate on those trades.
- Latency arbitrage and abusive-trading clauses. Commissions on trades the broker classifies as abusive can be reversed. Rebates on reversed commissions are clawed back.
- Execution model. Look for the broker's published execution statistics and order types.
